It’s been a busy week for Wyatt. On Friday, September 14th, we visited Sheltering Arms daycare and read Wyatt the Wonder Dog Learns About Good Manners to an energetic class of three year olds. After the story we all made Wyatt puppy dog ear headbands to wear. What a fun afternoon that was!
This week we’ve been preparing for Wyatt’s big book launch of his newest book: Wyatt the Wonder Dog Goes to Kindergarten. It’s one of his biggest adventures yet and we’re having a big book launch party at my house just to celebrate! It’s going to be a birthday party too with cake and ice cream! There will also be special Wyatt themed cookies for all the guests. I hope to see you there.

It’s the time of year for setting goals and planning for the future. If you like Wyatt, are thinking about how to improve your performance at school, here’s a great book to inspire even the most distracted student to organize and plan their school day with great success. Annie’s Plan: Taking Charge of Schoolwork and Homework is written by Jeanne Kraus, a a teacher and an educational specialist with expertise in attention disorders. Can you imagine learning in a classroom that looks like this? Can you imagine learning Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, English, Kiswahil with no textbooks? Students at Kioni Generations High School in Kenya do just that.
When I first began writing and publishing the Wyatt series I knew that I wanted to use part of the profits from book sales to make a difference in the world in some way. The Wyatt books are about empowering children to be super problem solvers and I was looking for an ongoing mission that combined books, children and Wyatt in some way. One Sunday last month while listening to my friend Beth Garrett present a slide show about her summer mission trip to Africa and her passion to raise money for textbooks for the Kioni school that she visited, I was suddenly inspired. I can’t think of a better cause than funding textbooks for students, especially students who are so passionate about learning that they overcome the amazing odds that these students do! Not only do they travel great distances from their homes to attend school but they learn in a bare classroom with no electricity and no textbooks! Even the teacher does not have a teacher’s guide. Every time you purchase a Wyatt book, you will be helping these committed students as they accomplish their dream of overcoming extreme poverty through education.

My friend Ellen and I decided to introduce the friendly folks in Blairsville Georgia to Wyatt The Wonder Dog and Ellen’s crafts, so last Saturday we got a booth at the local Farmer’s Market. Here’s Ellen setting up the booth:

Wyatt The Wonder Dog has a good friend, Hatch who needs your help! Hatch is a black lab who was abandoned in a neighborhood in Kennesaw one year ago. Can you imagine leaving your dog in the middle of a cold snowy day and not knowing whether someone would take care of him or not? Lucky for Hatch, Kathy Baker, owner of Must Love Dogs Inc, a doggie daycare, boarding and grooming facility found Hatch and took him in. Hatch has been a happy resident of Must Love Dogs ever since. Unfortunately, Hatch has arthritis and possibly even bone cancer, but he still has a happy loving attitude.
Pam the illustrator and I have decided to write Hatch’s character into our latest book! This means that one of the characters in the book will be named Hatch. Keep checking back to see the upcoming illustration of Hatch on this web site AND come to the upcoming book signing to see the actual illustration!
Proceeds from a book signing scheduled at Must Love Dogs Inc Saturday, March 5th from 3:00-5:00 will go to Hatch’s upkeep and care. Pam Gardner will be there with some new sketches from our next Wyatt book, due out this summer! You can be the first to see the new character in the book named Hatch in honor of Wyatt’s friend. I will read the story of Wyatt the Wonder Dog to children and we’ll have a special Wyatt color sheet to give away. It should be a lot of fun! Wyatt and I hope to see you there!

It is coming…The next Wyatt book is just around the corner. Yes, Wyatt has been wondering about something new and it is a concern for many children, especially during the school year. In this illustration from the upcoming book, Wyatt has a new problem to solve. What do you think it is?
What an amazing journey this has been! Publishing is definitely a different world and time has a different meaning to us all. After about five months of waiting for printing to occur, everything is finally completed and I have a box of shiny new books sitting in my office. It has been a thrill to share them with others. Just this week, I have begun reading the story in first grade classes and the reaction of the students is precious. They are amazed that I could actually get the words on the pages. Sometimes I am amazed at that as well.
