Everyone got to meet Hatch, the sweetest dog in the world and hear Wyatt’s story. Thanks to Must Love Dogs Inc. for sponsoring the event. It was a great Saturday afternoon!
Wyatt The Wonder Dog has a good friend, Hatch who needs your help! Hatch is a black lab who was abandoned in a neighborhood in Kennesaw one year ago. Can you imagine leaving your dog in the middle of a cold snowy day and not knowing whether someone would take care of him or not? Lucky for Hatch, Kathy Baker, owner of Must Love Dogs Inc, a doggie daycare, boarding and grooming facility found Hatch and took him in. Hatch has been a happy resident of Must Love Dogs ever since. Unfortunately, Hatch has arthritis and possibly even bone cancer, but he still has a happy loving attitude.
Pam the illustrator and I have decided to write Hatch’s character into our latest book! This means that one of the characters in the book will be named Hatch. Keep checking back to see the upcoming illustration of Hatch on this web site AND come to the upcoming book signing to see the actual illustration!
Proceeds from a book signing scheduled at Must Love Dogs Inc Saturday, March 5th from 3:00-5:00 will go to Hatch’s upkeep and care. Pam Gardner will be there with some new sketches from our next Wyatt book, due out this summer! You can be the first to see the new character in the book named Hatch in honor of Wyatt’s friend. I will read the story of Wyatt the Wonder Dog to children and we’ll have a special Wyatt color sheet to give away. It should be a lot of fun! Wyatt and I hope to see you there!

What a week it has been! I spoke to the Cherokee County Delta Kappa Gamma chapter on Tuesday about literacy and my dream of publishing a book. Thank you to all the members for the opportunity and hospitality you extended.
Saturday was Wyatt’s first ever book signing event and we had such a great time! Pam Gardner the illustrator and I talked with children and adults at the Yawn’s Books and More in Canton Georgia. Everyone I talked with really enjoyed the event and commented that Yawn’s is the best kept secret in Canton!
Finally, on Sunday, Wyatt and I participated in the Holiday Bazaar at Kennesaw United Methodist Church, where we had a booth and sold not only Wyatt books but lots of other children’s books as well. Wyatt has been so popular that I will soon be ordering a new shipment of books! You can continue to order on this website or on Amazon.com . Thanks to everyone who has been so supportive!
The last two weeks I’ve been visiting second grade classes and talking about writing a book. Students at this age are not shy about asking questions. Sometimes they ask questions I haven’t even considered. Here’s a few samples: How old is Wyatt? When is his birthday? Is there going to be another Wyatt book? Could you put a lot of the stories together and make a chapter book?
Then there is the interesting but irrelevant information: I have a friend named Wyatt or My room is messier than Wyatt’s room.
Overall though, I’m very impressed with the thoughtfulness and the creativity of the questions. I do believe there may be some future writers in our midst!
It’s getting closer! I’ve received a couple of emails from the publisher that they have adjusted the color throughout the book and changed the color of the background on the cover. I’m nervous but hope everything will be fine. Soon they will be downloading the files to my author center and I can look at them. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that we can move forward. There are a lot of reasons for my impatience. Not the least of which is that I have signed up to attend one of Dan Miller’s Write to the Bank seminars, and my hope was to have my book in hand when I go. Is this possible at this late date? I have my doubts since I don’t know how long it takes to produce the actual book and ship me some copies once it is approved.
Here’s what I’ve learned from this experience:
* Expect everything to take twice as long as you think it should.
* Just because I have a deadline, that doesn’t mean everyone else is operating on the same timetable.
* Publishing is a journey just like everything else in life.
* Make the most of all the down time by promoting the book in as many ways as possible.
As Dan Miller says, “Once you have the book published you have 10% of the work completed…”
Pam, the illustrator of Wyatt the Wonder Dog, and I are wondering where Wyatt is ourselves. Mostly though we are wondering what color Wyatt and his friends are going to be. Self-publishing is a new experience for both of us and there are some bumps in the road that we did not anticipate. The current issue that we are trying to resolve is the fact that when we looked at the proofs online, the color of the main charaters is off. Wyatt is orange rather than yellow and Max, his bossy friend, is more red than brown.
Waiting is hard at this point, but we are trying to make sure that the book is not average, but the best it can be. It is hard to balance our desire to see it finally in print, (no matter what!) with our desire to have it be excellent. Sooooo we are choosing the latter, but with great IMPATIENCE. Stay tuned. I promise it is coming.
Don’t you just love this guy? Doesn’t he make you smile? Let me introduce you to…Wyatt the Wonder Dog who is always wondering about something. He is the main character of my children’s book which will be PUBLISHED SOON! Stay tuned for more about his adventures, trials and tribulations!
